The Path I Didn’t Choose Became Part of My Purpose

A glimpse of the work and vision behind Mindset Trifecta

If you had asked me years ago where I thought my journey would lead, this is probably not the answer I would have given.

When I started university, I did not have a clear understanding of what I truly wanted to pursue.

Like many young people, I had an idea of the future I thought I was supposed to have.

Growing up in a typical African home, the path many of us are encouraged to dream about is becoming a doctor. For me, that was the direction I had in mind.

Not only because of the profession itself, but because I knew I loved helping people. I wanted to contribute, to make a difference, and to see people grow.

However, when that path did not work out, I found myself choosing the next available option: Medical Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.

At the time, it felt like a decision made without the clarity I wished I had.

I was still figuring myself out.

But looking back, I realise that sometimes the paths we enter without a full understanding of where they will lead can still shape us in unexpected ways.

Studying Biochemistry introduced me to the complexity of life and the systems that sustain it.

It taught me to observe carefully, think analytically, ask better questions, and look beyond what is immediately visible.

Over time, I began to realise that my curiosity was not only about understanding biological systems.

It was also about understanding people.

Their experiences.

Their challenges.

Their potential.

Through education and working with young people, I found myself asking deeper questions:

  1. How do we help people understand themselves?
  2. How do we create environments where young people can grow with confidence and purpose?
  3. How do we build individuals before we ask them to lead others?

Looking back, I no longer see my degree as a detour.

It became part of the foundation that shaped how I see people, growth, and leadership.

I’m still figuring things out as I grow.

I don’t have every answer, but I have learned that our journeys do not always make sense while we are living them.

Sometimes, the experiences we never planned for become the ones that prepare us for the work we are called to do.

Because just as every living system has a foundation, every person does too.

And when that foundation is strengthened, people are better positioned to grow, adapt, and create meaningful impact.

One of the greatest lessons my journey has taught me is this:

Sometimes the path we would never have chosen becomes the one that quietly prepares us for the work we are growing into.
