Unmuzzle Z mirror - 2:31 Club

Unmuzzle Z Mirror

I have to be honest with you all—and with myself—because I’m the one who should have known better.

I am the creator of the Quilt of Courage. That project? That’s my baby. I made it so that survivors, truth-tellers, and the broken-hearted could stitch their stories into something visible, something that couldn't be erased. I poured my soul into making sure other people had a place to lay their pain down.

Then the MV Barima tragedy happened, and I became silent.

Three days of mourning. Three days of watching a country suffer emotionally, with no support from the Government. No mental health plan. No psychological support. Just... sadness in the air like smoke. And I had *so much* to say. I always do—they literally call me talkative. But this time, I froze. I was terrified. "I'm not worried about losing my job--I don't want anything from the government, no position, no payout, nothing at all." I was terrified of cancel culture. I also saw what it did to families, and I panicked because I know what it did to me. So I pulled my head down and I stayed small.

Then 2:31 AM on July 28th hit me like a wave. I woke up, heart thumping, and this voice just cut through the dark in my spirit: why are you muzzled? Why aren't you saying anything?

And I had to sit there, in the silence of my own room, and admit the ugly truth. I was afraid. Plain and simple. I asked myself the ego buster—Sharmin, what do you even want from them? And the answer was nothing. Absolutely nothing. I just wanted our nation to be held. I just wanted us to be seen in our pain. But I let fear rewrite my narrative.

And then it hit me—the irony of it all. I am the woman behind the Quilt of Courage. I literally created a global space for people to lay down their fear and pick up their truth. But I was acting like I didn't have a patch to add. I was acting like my silence didn't matter. I was acting like I wasn't worthy of my own creation.

Talk about a mirror moment! So I came up with this little mantra for myself—Unmuzzle Z mirror. I had to stop blaming the government, the culture, or anyone else. I had to look at Sharmin and say, girl, why are YOU quiet? And I had to take my own medicine.

I'm not asking you to join a group, a party, or a movement with a bunch of rules. That's not me. I'm inviting you to join the 2:31 Club—it's that split second in the dark when you realize silence isn't protecting you, it's just making you invisible. It's a decision. A brave choice to stop fear from deciding your future.

I made the Quilt of Courage for people like us. For the ones who swallow their words to keep the peace. For the ones who edit themselves down to nothing just to survive. I made it so we could stitch our frayed edges together and finally feel held.

And now I realize—I have to add my own patch too. This is my patch. The one that says "I was scared, but I spoke anyway."

If you've been muzzled--whether by the Government, by cancel culture, or by your own fear—look in the mirror and ask yourself what you're really protecting. Because half the time, the thing we're scared of losing is already gone the moment we stop being real.

I'm not perfect. I'm just Sharmin. scared, courageous, and finally back to being myself. I Have A VoiCe,

Stitch your patch with me. Because we need every single ragged, beautiful piece to keep each other warm.
