When Goals Become Mirrors

Yesterday, I stumbled upon the list of goals I wrote for myself in 2025.

Curious, I sat down and began reading them one after another. Some made me smile. Others reminded me of dreams I once held so tightly. But as I reached the end of the page, a quiet realization settled in my heart.

I had not accomplished even half of them.

Then another thought struck me.

This year's goals looked almost the same.

It felt as though I had been writing the same dreams every year, carrying them from one notebook to another, while telling myself, "This will be the year." Yet somehow, the cycle remained unbroken.

For a moment, I questioned myself.

Was I lacking discipline? Was I dreaming too big? Or had I simply become comfortable with planning more than acting?

In Yoruba, there is a saying: "Àìgbẹ̀sẹ̀ kì í jẹ́ ká dé ibi à ń lọ." — Without taking steps, we cannot reach our destination.

The proverb reminded me that goals are not fulfilled because we write them beautifully. They are fulfilled because we return to them daily, even when motivation disappears.

As I reflected, I realized that life had not been standing still. There had been unexpected challenges, disappointments, and responsibilities I never planned for. I had grown in ways that were not written on that list. I had learned lessons no goal could have predicted.

Still, growth should not become an excuse for abandoning the dreams that matter.

Yesterday's discovery did not discourage me. Instead, it became a mirror.

It showed me that repeating the same goals without changing my habits will only repeat the same results.

So today, I am choosing something different.

Not another perfect list.

Not another promise to my future self.

I am choosing consistency over excitement, progress over perfection, and small daily actions over grand yearly resolutions.

Perhaps success is not measured by how many goals we write at the beginning of the year, but by how faithfully we pursue them when no one is watching.

If you, like me, have ever opened an old notebook and realized that yesterday's dreams are still waiting for today's effort, do not be ashamed.

Do not throw the dreams away.

Instead, ask yourself one simple question:

What small step can I take today that my future self will thank me for?

Sometimes the goal was never impossible.

Sometimes it was simply waiting for us to become the person who would not give up on
