Chasing Mars from Afghanistan: Looking for a Pathway to the Stars

My name is Mahnaz a girl from Afghanistan who just finished high school. Growing up here is not easy, especially for a girl who wants to study. The ground under my feet always felt uncertain, but whenever things became too hard, I learned to look up at the sky. In the dark nights of Kabul, away from the city lights, the stars showed me a beautiful world—a world with no borders, infinite possibilities, and big dreams.Among all those bright stars, one small, reddish dot always caught my eyes. Mars.For many people, dreaming about Mars from a country like Afghanistan looks like an impossible dream. They ask, "Why space? Why Mars?" But for me, this dream kept me alive. It gave me hope. I believe that if humans can dream about walking on the red deserts of Mars, then there must be a way for a brave Afghan girl to join this journey too.My love for space is not just about watching the stars. I spent hours reading every simple article, watching online videos, and studying any physics book I could find. But I know that passion is not enough. To study planetary science and space, I cannot just sit behind a laptop screen. An online class cannot teach me how to build a rover, touch real laboratory tools, or work with advanced telescopes. This field needs real, hands-on experience.This is why I need a fully-funded, face-to-face scholarship in a real university. I want to sit in a real classroom, talk to professors face-to-face, and work in actual science labs. I am a brave girl, and I am not afraid of hard work or moving to a new country alone. I just need one opportunity, one bridge, to change my big curiosity into real skills.I am looking for a pathway to the stars. I want to learn, grow, and one day bring this amazing knowledge back to my people.

It is the moment when the sky becomes clean and the stars shine like diamonds. I sit on the roof of our house, look up, and forget all the problems around me. I imagine myself working with big teams of scientists, studying the red rocks of Mars, and finding answers to the mysteries of the universe.Being a girl in Afghanistan today means you have to be stronger than your problems. When high school finished, many doors closed for girls like me. But nobody can close the door of the sky. Nobody can stop my mind from traveling millions of kilometers away to Mars. Space gave me a safe place to dream when the world around me felt too small and heavy.I know that studying planetary science is very hard. It needs mathematics, physics, and a lot of practice in real laboratories. I don't want to just read about these things in books forever. I want to touch the machines, use the software, and see how a real spacecraft is built. This is why an online class cannot help me change my country's future. I need to be there, learn by doing, and become a real scientist.My dream is not just for myself. I want to show every young girl in Afghanistan that our dreams are not limited by our borders. If a girl from Kabul can reach for Mars, then any girl can achieve anything she wants. I want to become a teacher and a mentor for the next generation of Afghan children, to show them that science is the key to a brighter future.
