I think it is only fair that I introduce myself.
After all, I have already walked into this space, said a few things I care deeply about, and left without properly telling you who was speaking.
So, hello.
My name is Nsima Abigail. I am a medical student in Nigeria, which means that on most days, I am somewhere between trying to understand the human body, questioning my life choices, and wondering why I ever thought medicine would be a reasonable thing to do.
And yet, I love it.
I am becoming a doctor, but I don't want that to become the only interesting thing about me.
Before medicine became such a significant part of my life, I was—and still am—a girl who loved stories, music, sports, good movies, conversations that go on for far too long, and the wonderfully complicated business of being human.
I am fascinated by people.
The way we think.
The things we don't say.
The stories we carry quietly.
The things that make us laugh in the middle of terrible days.
The little experiences that change us without announcing that they are doing so.
Maybe that is why I write. I don't think I write because I have everything figured out. Quite the opposite, actually.
I write because I am still figuring things out. I write about the questions that stay with me after the conversation has ended. I write about things I notice. Things I care about. Things I wish more people talked about. Sometimes, I write because there is a thought sitting in my head that refuses to pay rent.
And sometimes, I simply want to tell a good story.
I am also learning that growing up is a strange thing. You begin with a very clear idea of who you are going to become, and then life introduces you to versions of yourself you never expected to meet. Some you like, some you outgrow, some you have to forgive, and some you are still learning to understand.
I don't intend to put my entire life on the internet. There are parts of me that belong to me, and I think that is a beautiful thing. But I do want to leave little pieces of my perspective here. Enough for you to know the person behind the words. Enough for you to recognise my voice when you see it again.
Because I hope this won't be my last story here. Maybe years from now, someone will stumble across this introduction and think, "Oh. So this is where she started". And I hope by then I will have become many things I cannot yet imagine.
A doctor.
A writer.
A better friend.
A wiser woman.
Perhaps a terrible dancer who has finally accepted that rhythm is, in fact, a spiritual gift. Who knows?
For now, though, I am simply Abigail. A medical student. A writer. A curious human being.
Still learning.
Still becoming.
Still asking questions. And, apparently, still finding excuses to write about it.
So, hello, World Pulse. Now you know a little bit about me. I have a feeling we'll be seeing quite a bit of each other.
Remember my name, because I'm not going anywhere. 😁
