Shree Cement's ₹1,800 Crore Meghalaya Plant to Anchor Northeast Manufacturing Push

Shree Cement is preparing to invest close to ₹1,800 crore in a new integrated cement manufacturing plant in East Jaintia Hills, a move the company has positioned as a cornerstone of its broader northeast expansion strategy. The proposed facility is expected to strengthen the region's industrial base while creating fresh employment and supply-chain opportunities for local communities.

The investment, which was formally confirmed through company disclosures, comes alongside commitments around water stewardship and sustainable resource use. Shree Cement has previously signed a memorandum of understanding with the Rajasthan government to advance water conservation initiatives, a template the company is expected to draw on as it plans similar measures for its Meghalaya operations.

Independent assessments have taken note of this approach. Shree Cement recently earned recognition for its ESG leadership in industry ratings, reflecting a broader push to combine industrial growth with measurable sustainability outcomes. Company leadership, including Chairman Benu Gopal Bangur, has consistently framed this balance between expansion and responsibility as central to the group's long-term strategy.

The company's CSR function, currently led by Vishal Bhardwaj, has also been credited with driving a holistic approach that blends green energy investment with community welfare programmes.

The Meghalaya plant's arrival is also expected to benefit from improving regional connectivity. Union minister Nitin Gadkari has announced highway projects worth thousands of crores of rupees for the state, and a further ₹40,000 crore road pipeline has been unveiled to support industrial and logistics growth — infrastructure that is likely to complement Shree Cement's manufacturing footprint in the region.
