Ssenkaali Joseph: Building an entertainment link between Uganda and Dubai

What you need to know

Ssenkaali Joseph has built his career around promoting Ugandan entertainment, with his work taking him between Kampala and Dubai and later into organising The Showing Awards.

For Ssenkaali Joseph, the entertainment business is not only about the artiste on stage.

There is also the promoter working behind the scenes, looking for audiences, arranging events and trying to create opportunities for performers outside Uganda.

That has been the path taken by Joseph, a 27-year-old promoter from Lukaya Town Council in Kalungu District.

Born on February 12, 1999, Joseph attended Kamuwunga Primary School and later Mpeera Secondary School. His interest in entertainment developed while growing up in the Greater Masaka area, where music and community events formed part of everyday life.

He later turned that interest into a business.

Joseph is the founder and chief executive officer of Ssenkaali Promotions, an entertainment agency operating between Kampala and Dubai. Its work includes artiste promotion and management, event organisation, digital marketing and branding.

Finding an audience abroad

Dubai became an important part of Joseph’s work as he began working with Ugandan entertainers targeting audiences in the United Arab Emirates.

For artistes travelling from Uganda, performing abroad involves more than securing a venue. There is the question of publicity, audience mobilisation, partnerships and maintaining a connection with fans after the event.

These are some of the areas Joseph has worked in through his promotion business.

His activities have included music events and showcases designed to bring Ugandan performers closer to East African audiences living in Dubai.

The work has also placed him in a position where he deals with two different entertainment markets — one at home and another shaped largely by the diaspora.

Starting the Showing Awards

Joseph expanded his work in 2024 when he founded The Showing Awards.

The awards were launched in Dubai and have since developed a presence in Uganda. The platform was preparing for its third edition in 2026.

Rather than concentrating only on musicians, the awards recognise people working across different parts of entertainment and the creative economy. Categories have included musicians, DJs, content creators, models, influencers, promoters and entrepreneurs.

For Joseph, the idea was to create another avenue through which people in the industry could be recognised while bringing together creatives from Uganda and the diaspora.

The awards have also provided another link between his work in Kampala and Dubai.

Beyond the stage

Joseph's work is largely conducted away from the spotlight.

Promoters often determine which artistes get an opportunity to perform, where they appear and how audiences are reached. In the diaspora market, that role can be even more important because performers are entering an environment where they may not have established relationships.

That is the space Joseph has chosen to work in.

At 27, he remains relatively young in an entertainment industry where many promoters build their careers over decades. His business, however, has already taken him beyond Uganda's borders.

From Lukaya to Kampala and Dubai, Joseph's career reflects the growing relationship between Uganda's entertainment industry and its diaspora audience.

The Showing Awards are the latest part of that journey, giving him a platform not just to promote performances, but to recognise the people creating, organising and sustaining the entertainment industry itself.
