Standing for Africa’s Children: A New Call to Turn Child Rights Into Community Action

Across Africa, millions of children continue to face violence, abuse, trafficking, child labour, child marriage, exploitation, neglect, and exclusion.

The African Child Rights Marshal (ACRM) is calling for a stronger community response—one that places children’s safety, dignity, and voices at the center of Africa’s development.

Rooted in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child, ACRM is proposing a continent-wide movement that would bring child-rights education, prevention, advocacy, and safeguarding closer to families and communities.

Its vision reaches across all 54 African countries, mobilising educators, professionals, human rights advocates, community leaders, young people, and other change-makers to become active partners in protecting children.

At the grassroots, ACRM proposes Community Child Protection Officers who would help communities understand children's rights, identify protection concerns, promote prevention, and facilitate referrals to appropriate legally authorised institutions.

The initiative is clear that these officers are not law enforcement personnel and would not have powers of arrest, detention, investigation, or prosecution. Their role is centered on education, prevention, safeguarding, mobilisation and responsible referral.

But protecting children cannot stop at responding to harm. ACRM also seeks to empower children to know their rights, participate in decisions affecting them, and develop the confidence and skills needed to shape their futures.

Through proposed students' clubs, child-rights education, sports and talent development, vocational initiatives, youth empowerment, and media advocacy, the initiative aims to make children's rights a lived reality rather than simply a principle contained in international agreements.

Its message is a challenge to governments, families, communities, institutions, and citizens alike:

No child should be left behind.

No child should be abused.

No child should be exploited.

No child should be silenced.

ACRM's philosophy is simple:

The future of Africa depends on how seriously the continent protects its children today. ACRM is calling for that protection to begin where children live—in families, schools, and communities—and for every responsible person to become part of the solution.
