“The Satisfaction of Gratitude”
These bustling streets, crowded places, and the haze of expectations, hopes, and disappointments—along with the endless flicker of traffic lights each seem to whisper about the tasks that await tomorrow. Yet have you ever paused, even for a moment, to listen to what the blessings around us—friends, vehicles, technology, and countless unseen comforts are trying to tell us?
Perhaps they are not reminders of an endless race to be better than everyone else. Yet that is how most of us see them. We live with a constant fear of being left behind, a fear of failure, and the pressure to keep moving forward. In this race, what we lose the most is gratitude. There is a famous quote by Rumi: “Wear gratitude like a cloak, and it will feed every corner of your life.” Attitude, ego, arrogance, and pride are often mistaken for strength. Many people believe that displaying these traits will earn them respect or make them appear more powerful. In reality, true strength comes from gratitude, kindness, confidence, and respect for others.
During my last summer break, I traveled with a group of volunteers to remote regions of my country. Our purpose was to conduct sessions on various career paths for students and young people. Not everyone there had access to the internet and other facilities that many of us take for granted.
As I interacted with the people there, something struck me deeply. Despite living in the same country and sharing the same humanity, our lives were vastly different in terms of education, living standards, and access to basic facilities. I did not view their lives with sympathy; instead, I reflected on how grateful I should be for my own blessings. With limited internet, fewer resources, and a simpler way of life, I began to understand how dependent we have become on conveniences we rarely stop to appreciate.
One of my cherished memories from that trip was a young boy who was not even old enough to attend our sessions. Yet he repeatedly requested to be included and listened attentively to every word we shared. His curiosity, determination, and eagerness to learn were deeply inspiring. That moment stayed with me. Because gratitude is not about having everything it is about recognizing the value of what we already have and learning to see life through appreciation rather than comparison.
This initiative of conducting sessions was not only helpful for them but also became a source of inspiration for me, reminding me of the importance of gratitude and contributing positively to society. We should always remain grateful, because the sense of satisfaction that comes from gratitude cannot be found elsewhere. It brings a quiet peace within the heart a contentment that no achievement or possession can truly replace.
In hands that give, in hearts that see,
in what we have, in what we be,
a gentle peace begins to grow
the kind no wealth will ever show.
Note: This writing is not intended to compare individuals or situations, nor to look down upon anyone in any way. It is simply a reflection inspired by observation and experience, written to raise awareness about how quickly the value of gratitude is fading in our fast paced lives. Its purpose is not judgment, but reflection to gently remind us to appreciate what we already have and to recognize the blessings often overlooked in everyday life.
