Three Months of Learning and Leading

Faith, our intern, reflects on her three-month internship, what she has learned along the way and the new project she is currently leading.

After finishing my exams, I started a three-month internship with Power for the People (PFP) as a Communications and Fundraising Intern. I am now in my final month and I thought it was time to share a little of what I have been up to.

These past few months have been full of new experiences, new platforms and plenty of learning. I have worked across communications, fundraising, social media, website content and stories from the field, while also getting to work with platforms and tools I had not used before, including Vimeo, Mailchimp, Wix, GoodHub, The Big Give and Beacon. From updating a website and preparing content for supporters to learning how online fundraising campaigns come together and getting familiar with donor management, there has never really been a dull moment. It has been exciting to see how all these different pieces connect behind the scenes to help an organisation communicate its work, engage supporters and raise funds for communities.

And now, in my final month, I am taking on a project that I am particularly excited about: ARISE Dignity Packs.

ARISE Dignity Packs are reusable menstrual health products made locally at the ARISE Centre in Homa Bay County, Kenya. The Centre is a space where women and young people develop practical skills, access training and explore opportunities to earn an income and build livelihoods. This reflects PFP's wider approach of Handshakes Not Handouts, which is about creating opportunities for people to develop their skills, build enterprises and take greater ownership of solutions within their communities.

The Dignity Pack enterprise is one of the initiatives growing from this work. At the ARISE Centre, women and young people are trained in the production of reusable menstrual products, giving them practical skills that can be used to create income while contributing to a product that addresses a real need in their communities. The Centre has already produced and distributed more than 2,000 Dignity Packs through schools and health programmes, and in 2025, the products received Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) accreditation.

The Centre is expanding its range to include maternity kits and period pants. This growing production means more menstrual health products can reach the girls and women who need them, while the enterprise continues to develop its range and reach.

The income generated through the enterprise contributes to the wider work of the ARISE Centre, helping support its community programmes and its goal of becoming increasingly self-sustaining. This is the part of the project that I am particularly interested in telling people about. The Dignity Pack is not an isolated product. Its sales contribute to a wider model where an enterprise can generate income that helps support community work.

For many girls, getting sanitary products every month can be a real challenge and that can affect their ability to attend school and go about their daily lives with confidence.
