What Happens When Education Is No Longer a Priority?

As a corps member serving in a rural community in Oyo State, Nigeria, I've been asking myself a difficult question:

What happens when a child grows up believing education isn't important?

Every day, I meet children with incredible potential. They are curious, intelligent, and full of dreams. Yet, for many of them, education is not seen as a pathway to opportunity. Poverty, limited awareness, and daily survival often take precedence over the classroom.

As I observe this reality, I realize that the challenge isn't just about building more schools. It's also about helping families see education as an investment rather than a luxury.

This experience has changed me. It has reminded me that where a child is born should never determine how far they can dream.

As a corps member, I may not be able to change the entire system, but I can encourage one child, support one classroom, and inspire one family at a time. Sometimes, lasting change begins with one conversation.

To those working in rural communities around the world: What strategies have helped you encourage children to stay in school? I'd love to learn from your experiences.
